Chaozhou, Pingtung Integrated Application for a 161kV Extra-High Voltage

Located on industrial land in Chaozhou, Pingtung, this project integrates existing buildings with undeveloped sites to establish the overall planning and application framework for a 161kV extra-high voltage substation and associated large-scale energy storage facilities. The development is intended to serve as a key piece of infrastructure for regional energy conversion, power distribution, and future smart grid systems.

Given the complexity of the site conditions, the project began with a comprehensive assessment of the existing buildings, site infrastructure, operational constraints, and surrounding industrial context. In response to the technical requirements of the high-voltage power system, the planning integrates substation equipment, energy storage systems, fire safety infrastructure, maintenance and operational spaces, and vehicular circulation into a coordinated and highly efficient facility layout.

The project also involves extensive interdisciplinary coordination across architecture, MEP, structural engineering, energy systems, and regulatory compliance. Particular attention was given to safety separation distances, fire prevention strategies, thermal dissipation requirements, and the modular nature of the energy storage systems, requiring an integrated planning approach throughout the design and application process.

In parallel, the project required close coordination with multiple authorities and regulatory bodies concerning industrial land use, building administration, fire safety approvals, and energy infrastructure applications. The design team worked to navigate these complex approval procedures whilst maintaining operational efficiency and future adaptability of the facility.

From a spatial and architectural perspective, the scheme also considers the broader industrial setting and long-term expansion flexibility. Through the careful integration of building massing, boundary wall systems, equipment zoning, vehicular access, and landscape interfaces, the project aims to enhance both the operational performance of the facility and its relationship with the surrounding environment. Through this project, JYA demonstrates its expertise in large-scale energy infrastructure, industrial architecture, and highly complex MEP-integrated developments, while continuing to explore the evolving relationship between future energy systems, industrial development, and architectural space.
